Welcome! My name is Pedro Abelin. I am a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland and a member of the Interdisciplinary Laboratory of Computational Social Science (iLCSS) and the Resocie research group.
My research centers on international political economy, comparative political behavior, and political communication, with a regional focus on Latin America. I study Brazil–China relations, populism, and how media consumption shapes political attitudes and behavior in polarized environments.
To address these questions, I use mixed methods, including computational text analysis, experimental and observational data, and qualitative interviews.
My work has been published or is forthcoming in Global Society, Journal of Politics in Latin America, and Information, Communication & Society, among others.
Before beginning my Ph.D., I received my B.A. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of Brasília. I was also a research fellow for three years at the National Institute of Science and Technology in Democracy and Democratization of Communication (INCT/IDDC) in Brazil.
Outside academia, I enjoy cinema, literature, and football, and occasionally write film reviews on Letterboxd.
